Roofing 101
Roofing is an important part of every home. The roofing system is made up of many more parts than just the shingles. This video explains some of the basics of the roofing system and what each part is responsible for.
The first part that is laid down after the wood frame is a leak barrier. High performance leak barriers are installed at the edges, peaks, and valleys of the roof. These parts of the roof are most vulnerable to leaks and other damage, and this layer helps keep them sealed securely.
The next step is to install a layer of roof deck protection. This is a thin and flexible material that keeps rain that works under the shingles from infiltrating your home and causing water damage.
Metal drip edges are also installed over the leak barrier. This gives added protection to the shingles on the edge of the roof that are most likely to be peeled off by heavy storms. Then starter strips and shingles are installed. This is the meat and potatoes of the roofing system.
Added protection is installed at the peaks because the shingles will not fit securely there. Flashing is installed around pipes and the chimney. For more information, check out the video above.
