It might shock you to learn that only one out of every five Americans is happy with their home decor. That is only 20% of the population. That means that 80% of America wishes they had something different in their homes, whether that be in their living rooms, family rooms, their bedrooms, or anywhere else in their homes. In fact, 14% of people in the United States feel that their furnishings make them feel depressed and gloomy all the time.

There are many people out there who simply do not know what it is they want. We grow up in our parent’s home and their furniture is our furniture. We live in our parent’s home, leave for college where the dorm room furniture might eventually get replaced by the used furniture we get a hold of when we move into our first apartment. But, when we move into a home or a place that is all our own, we want furniture that reflects who we are. Furniture that says a little something about ourselves.

The good news is, you can really find furniture that makes you feel comfortable, that makes you happy. Furniture like that is certainly out there but knowing what it is that you like can take a little time and a bit of investigating. There will undoubtedly be questions. You will wonder where to buy contemporary furniture or where to buy industrial furniture. You might wonder if rustic modern furniture is for you or if Scandinavian furnishings are something that floats your boat.

Trying all different kinds and styles of furniture and household items might be something you have to do a little bit at a time. If that is the case, you might want to take a look at mid-century furniture. When considering where to buy contemporary furniture, seeing what the mid-century style has to offer might give you a real sense that you have something that is both new and unique while at the same time bringing a sense of classic style to your home.

Houzz recently did a home decorating survey and found that only 2% of respondents felt they had achieved what they called their “ultimate vision for their home.” One of the reasons this might be the case is that they had to decorate their home bit by bit and were not able to obtain any kind of continuity in the design. They might have wondered where to buy contemporary furniture but did not realize that contemporary styles change relatively quickly.

Mid-century furniture has a classic look that has made a comeback in a very contemporary way. Mid-century furniture refers to a style that emerged in the mid 20th century, basically between the years 1933 to 1965, though some would argue that those years should be narrowed to between 1947 to 1957.

Mid-century furniture has been adapted to today’s modern world culminating in what has become known as “mid-century modern.” If you are a fan of the television show “Mad Men,” then you know that it was set from the years 1960 to 1970. In the first few seasons of the show, you can see what mid-century furniture looks like. Today, designers have taken that mid-century look and updated it to give us a look that will not be going out of style for quite a while. After all, if designers keep going back to it, there must be something to say about its staying power.
